Best Travel Time for Yuanyang Terraced Fields
The terraces display distinct scenery in different seasons, yet the optimal visiting window falls between November and March of the following year. After the autumn harvest, the paddies are fully filled with water for maintenance. During this period, the terraces present striking layered textures, shimmering brightly under sunlight. Most stunning terrace photos circulating online are captured within this timeframe. Water is indispensable to the beauty of the terraces, so the ideal travel season runs from post-harvest to pre-transplanting rice seedlings, roughly November to March each year.
Photography Timing
The prime photography period spans November to April of the next year, with January and February being the absolute best months.
Yuanyang’s terraces have well-defined windows for sightseeing and shooting. From November to April, the paddies hold no rice crops; water-filled horizontal terraces glow translucent layer by layer, delivering extraordinary light and shadow effects. Sea of clouds frequently appear around the Spring Festival. Around the Lantern Festival, wild cherry blossoms, wild kapok, wild peach blossoms and birch-leaf pear flowers blanket the mountains in vivid red and white, forming a spectacular view.
Duoyishu Scenic Area is the top spot for morning shooting. As backlit sunlight disperses the morning mist, cascading terraces are gradually gilded. Hani and Yi villages nestled among the paddies are veiled in swirling clouds, creating an ethereal, poetic and dreamlike scene.
Bada and Mengpin’s Laohuzui Scenic Area are must-visit locations for sunsets. Bathed in the glow of the setting sun and colourful sunset clouds, connected terraces resemble a vast magnificent ocean. Rhythmic tiered layers, graceful curved lines and a riot of vivid hues leave visitors stunned, lost in the breathtaking landscape. If you look closely at the far upper-left corner of the Laohuzui viewing frame, you can spot the silhouette of a galloping steed lifting its hooves!
Other unique spots including Qingkou, Longshuba and the spiral terraces in Panzhihua also boast distinctive charms and are not to be missed.
