Recommended Travel Itineraries for Yuanyang
1. Classic Itineraries
Route 1: Longshuba — Jinzhuzhai
This circular route stretches roughly 10 kilometres, consisting of rural dirt roads and crushed stone paths, only accessible on foot. Set off in the afternoon to photograph the sunset and head back before nightfall.
Route 2: Qingkou — Laohuzui — Habo
This is the longest route with a one-way distance of 88 kilometres, best travelled by chartered car. Visit Qingkou first, then Habo, and finish with sunset shots at Laohuzui. If time is limited, skip Habo and only tour Qingkou and Laohuzui — this takes just half a day.
Route 3: Qingkou — Bada — Duoyishu
Though only 25 kilometres long, the rural roads slow down vehicle travel significantly. Head to Duoyishu at dawn to capture the sunrise, then visit Qingkou, take a midday break, and proceed to Bada for sunset photography in the evening.
Route 4: Qingkou — Adang Village — Niujiao Village
Less popular among tourists yet boasting stunning terraced scenery. The local market in Niujiao Village is also a delightful stop. While the total distance is merely 30 kilometres, the side road branching off Adang Village is entirely crushed stone, creating a bumpy, uncomfortable ride.
Tips for Classic Routes
- Minivans serve all scenic spots on Routes 2, 3 and 4 (all except Route 1), with fares ranging from 5 to 10 yuan; day trips are feasible.
- With a well-planned schedule, all four routes can be covered in 2 or 3 full days.
- Avoid drivers claiming they can finish all routes in one day — such a rushed schedule will leave you exhausted and cause you to miss the optimal lighting hours at each viewpoint.
- All four itineraries can start from Chen’s Hostel.
2. Cycling & Hiking Combo
Ride a bicycle from Xinjie Town to Duoyishu, store your bike at Duoyishu Sunshine Inn, then hike to Laohuzui. From Laohuzui, take a vehicle to Quanfuzhuang, then transfer to another ride back to Duoyishu. You may stay overnight at Duoyishu Sunshine Inn or cycle back to Xinjie Town the same day.

3. Multi-Day Cross-Destination Itinerary: Jianshui Ancient Town + Yuanyang Terraced Fields + Luoping Rapeseed Flowers
Jianshui Ancient Town features the Confucian Temple, Imperial Examination Hall, Writing Brush Pagoda and numerous traditional academies, which reflect the town’s profound heritage of respecting Confucius and Confucian culture.
Transport between Jianshui and Yuanyang
Regular shuttle buses run between the two locations; travel time is 1.5–3 hours with a fare of 32 yuan, departing on a rolling schedule.
Luoping Rapeseed Flower Season
The rapeseed flowers bloom at their peak from late February to early April every year, with mid-March as the prime viewing window. Luoping is blanketed in a breathtaking golden sea of blossoms during this period.
Transport from Yuanyang to Luoping
Take the route: Yuanyang — Gejiu — Mile — Luxi — Shizong. The journey takes 7–8 hours with a bus fare of roughly 60–70 yuan, and road conditions are decent. A newly built tunnel between Yuanyang and Gejiu cuts travel time down to 2 hours. Frequent buses operate from Gejiu to Luxi, and from Luxi onward to Luoping.
