Address: Miandian Town, Jianshui County
Hailed as "Asia’s No.1 Karst Cave" by Chinese and foreign karst geologists, Swallow Cave is split into a dry cave section and a water cave section. Hundreds of thousands of swiftlets nest in the water cave, yielding abundant edible bird’s nests. Local harvesters climb bare-handed without any safety gear to collect nests, a breathtakingly dangerous practice. Numerous horizontal inscribed boards hang dozens of meters high on the cave ceiling, all mounted by bold, skilled local climbers.
Transportation
Take buses bound for Gejiu, Kaiyuan or Mengzi from the county seat and alight at Swallow Cave stop (10 yuan, 30 minutes). The drop-off point is the Swallow Cave exit of Jishi Expressway, a 2-kilometer dirt road away from the scenic entrance. It takes around 20 minutes on foot, or visitors can take minivans waiting at the junction for an 8-yuan, 3-minute ride.
