Local Specialties of Wenshan
Wenshan is home to various ethnic minorities, offering a wide range of ethnic ornaments and handicrafts in local ethnic stores. Yanshan Rice Noodles
Regarded as one of the finest rice noodles in Yunnan, Yanshan rice noodles feature a bright white luster. They are slender, pliable, and tough enough not to break even when boiled for a long time.
Panax Notoginseng (Tianqi)
Wenshan abounds in Panax notoginseng, also known as Tianqi. Raw Panax notoginseng can stop bleeding, strengthen the heart, dissipate blood stasis, promote tissue regeneration, reduce swelling and relieve pain. When cooked, it activates blood circulation, nourishes blood and tonifies the body. Panax Notoginseng Steam Pot Chicken, a classic Yunnan dish, helps replenish vital energy and build up health.
Qiubei Chili
Cultivated since the late Ming Dynasty, Qiubei chili has a history of over 300 years. It is small in size with thick flesh, bright color, spicy skin and fragrant seeds, and contains high calories and oil content. Apart from being a popular condiment, it also helps stimulate gastric juice secretion and improve digestion. It is fondly called Yunnan Mini Chili.
Babao Rice
A premium rice variety produced in the Babao area of Guangnan County. Thanks to the unique local climate and soil, Babao rice is glossy white with plump grains and strong viscosity. Cooked rice is soft, fragrant and appetizing even if eaten regularly.
Zhuang Colorful Glutinous Rice
The preparation method varies by region and natural dyes. Generally, fragrant glutinous rice is soaked in juice extracted from edible plants such as yellow herb flowers, maple leaves, red and blue herbs and purple vines to absorb natural pigments. The dyed rice is then steamed in a bamboo steamer, yielding rice in black, red, yellow, blue, purple and white. The colorful rice looks like blooming flowers, gives off an inviting fragrance and tastes delicious.
Flat Rice
A traditional delicacy of Guangnan with a history of more than 200 years dating back to the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty. It is emerald green, smooth and tender, with flat grains. It tastes soft, glutinous, fragrant and subtly sweet.
Cured Pork Hock
Fresh pork hocks are salted and air-dried, then smoked over pine needles or sugarcane bagasse for one to two months. Mostly prepared in the cold lunar winter months, it can be enjoyed all year round with rich and mellow flavor.
Niejiao Liquor
Produced in Niejiao Village, Qiubei County, this liquor is brewed with rain and snow water from local ponds and special distiller’s yeast via solid-state fermentation and distillation. It is clear and transparent, mellow in taste with a lingering sweet aftertaste and no odd flavors, earning it the nickname Little Moutai.
Puzhehei Lotus Root Starch
Made from fresh wild lotus roots from Puzhehei Lake using modern processing techniques. A proper amount of cane sugar and easily absorbable calcium lactate are added according to scientific formulas. It contains no artificial additives or preservatives. Praised as Treasure from the Water, the starch is rich in amino acids, vitamins, dietary fiber and various trace elements.
Chili Paste
Guangnan chili paste is made by mincing fresh red chilies, garlic and Chinese prickly ash, then grinding and fermenting the mixture. Bright red in color, it blends savory, sour, sweet, fresh and spicy flavors. As a traditional ethnic condiment, it is ideal for seasoning and coloring dishes.
Wenshan Zhuang Brocade
Zhuang brocade is one of China's four great traditional brocades, divided into woven brocade and embroidered brocade. Woven brocade features vivid patterns, brilliant colors and great durability, commonly used for bedspreads, wall hangings and shoulder bags. Embroidered brocade is created by stitching distinctive patterns onto coarse cloth or woven brocade, with lively designs and charming hues.
Wenshan Miao Embroidery
Miao women are skilled at weaving and embroidery. Miao embroidery is crafted with five-colored threads, pursuing symmetry, fullness and gorgeousness. It is mainly used to decorate collars, sleeves, scarf edges and hems of costumes, as well as to make shoulder bags and purses.
