Zhuge Ying Ruins

The Zhuge Ying Ruins lie at the eastern foot of Fangshan Mountain. In the year 225 AD, tribal uprisings broke out in the south. Zhuge Liang personally led more than 40,000 troops to pacify the Nanzhong region.

After "crossing the Lu River (the Jinsha River) in the fifth lunar month", most soldiers suffered from heatstroke. Zhuge Liang set up a military camp at Fangshan Mountain and rested his army for nearly a month. The second capture of Meng Huo in the well-known "Seven Captures of Meng Huo" took place right around Fangshan.

Zhuge Ying refers to the remains of Zhuge Liang’s military camp. Despite a thousand years of weathering, traces of the barracks can still be vaguely seen.

The site is enclosed by three earthen city walls that perfectly guard the vital pass of the ancient Yaoxian Post Road. The city wall stretches 356 metres long, about 3 metres high and 2.4 metres thick, rammed solid with clay. Moats once ran outside the walls, yet they have been mostly silted up due to long-term disrepair, which further confirms the historical record of Zhuge Ying.
