When Is Yuanyang Terraced Fields (Ticketed Area) at Its Most Beautiful? Best Travel Seasons for Yuanyang Terraced Fields, Yunnan
Optimal Photography Period
From November to April each year, the terraces are fully filled with water. Layer upon layer of terraces shimmer with silvery ripples, presenting a spectacular and varied landscape ideal for photography.
Between December and January, red duckweed and other aquatic plants float across the water paddies, forming distinctive red terraces perfect for unique shots.
There are four core scenic spots at Yuanyang Terraced Fields: Duoyishu for sunrise, Bada for sunsets and sea of clouds, Laohuzui for sunsets, and Qingkou for mist-shrouded fairyland vistas. The terraces shift hues dramatically at different hours even from the same viewpoint. Spending an afternoon at one spot lets you witness the sea of mist and the terraces’ changing colors — this is the most breathtaking sight of all.
Watching Sunset & Sea of Clouds at Bada
To travel from Duoyishu to Bada for sunset over the sea of clouds, flag down a passing vehicle for a fare of 10 yuan.
Head there after 4:30 p.m.; sunset falls around 6:30 p.m., when the terraces display the richest color transitions. The sea of clouds at Bada can be viewed at any time of day.
Sunset Viewing at Laohuzui
Laohuzui is exclusively a sunset viewing spot with an independent viewing angle. It is recommended to join a group chartered vehicle from local inns. The ride takes roughly 40 minutes whether departing from Duoyishu or Xinjie Town; you may also flag down a passing car.
Chartering a private car is not advised unless you only have one full day to explore. Flagging down rides from Xinjie Town to any location costs at most 20 yuan, usually 15 yuan. Arrive at Laohuzui after 4:30 p.m. — arriving early yields little reward — and the golden viewing window ends around half past six.
Qingkou and Bada are the go-to spots for viewing sea of clouds during daytime hours. If you only have time for one sunset viewing experience, choose Laohuzui.
