The Manan Sea of Clouds is a celestial wonder in Yongshan County, embodying the climatic feature of northeastern Yunnan: "One mountain embraces four seasons; weather changes within ten li."
Travellers often set off from Xiluodu or Huanghua Town amid thick fog or drizzling rain. After twisting and turning along a winding mountain road for more than 40 kilometres, you finally reach the summit of Manan Mountain. Here, blue skies, white clouds and alpine meadows merge into one. Bathed in bright sunshine, hundreds of acres of grassland stretch out in layers of lush green, while flocks of sheep drift lazily about like clusters of blooming cotton flowers.
Standing on the mountain top, with blue clouds overhead and a boundless sea of clouds stretching beneath your feet, you are embraced by cool breezes. It feels as if you have ascended straight to heaven, filling your heart with pure joy.
Peak viewing time falls in midsummer. Crowds of photography enthusiasts flock here and climb the mountain early to wait for the magical scenery. Many celebrated photographers from in and out of the city have visited Manan repeatedly to capture the sea of clouds. Photographs and paintings inspired by this landscape have been published in numerous art journals. The site is planned to be developed into a natural scenic resort.
