The Five Lotus Peaks stand directly east of Lianfeng Town in Yongshan County, about 1.5 kilometres from the town centre. They form the main peak of the Wulianfeng Mountain Range. Natural spring water is available on the summit, and the peak is accessible by road with electricity supply.
The Five Lotus Peaks constitute a municipal-level nature reserve, with the summit rising to 2,561 metres above sea level. The total managed area of the reserve covers 21,010 hectares, including a core zone of 20,132 hectares and an experimental zone of 877.5 hectares. The slopes between the peaks are covered with shrub forests and weeds, together with rare local tree species such as cypress.
The mountain range gets its name from its undulating peaks shaped like a newly bloomed five-petalled lotus flower. According to the Brief Records of Jiaqing-era County Annals, the Five Lotus Peaks rank first among the Eight Great Sights of Yongshan.
A line of ancient poetry vividly depicts this scenery:
Five peaks pierce high into the clouds;
The lotus stays unbroken through all four seasons’ winds.
The majestic beauty of the Five Lotus Peaks, the sunrise over the five summits, and the magnificent rime scenery across ten thousand mu of woodland are world-famous natural wonders.
At dawn, the mountain glows like a golden lotus just beginning to open, looking magnificent and resplendent. Shrouded in mist, the peaks appear and disappear, light and ethereal. In winter, the whole mountain is crystal clear and breathtakingly beautiful.
The Wulianfeng Mountain Range stretches more than one hundred kilometres across Maolin, Lianfeng and Shuizhu Townships of Yongshan County. Every winter, the entire mountain turns into an icy wonderland, covered with stunning rime. The main peak stands out brilliantly amid the sea of snow. Up close, the frost-covered branches look like thousands of pear trees bursting into bloom; viewed from afar, the peak resembles a pure white lotus flower opening up, holy and immaculate.
The mountain range teems with wild plants and animals and abundant mountain delicacies. Natural ski slopes can be found everywhere on the mountainside in winter.
Muslim villages scatter on the back hills of the Five Lotus Peaks, preserving distinctive Islamic customs and halal food culture.
Nestled in the forests on both sides of the mountain are small hamlets of the Big Flower Miao ethnic subgroup, where lusheng music and mountain folk songs echo beneath the blue sky and white clouds.
Facing the peaks lies Lianfeng Ancient Town, the former county seat. Towering old Chinese cedar trees reach straight toward the sky, and flagstone streets lined with grey-tiled mud-brick houses embody the unique charm of an ancient mountain town.
As a key mountain tourist hub on land routes in Yongshan, Lianfeng is planned to develop into an integrated scenic spot featuring folk culture homestays, mountain resorts, summer retreats, ice and snow sightseeing, and characteristic mountain cuisine.
