The Chieftain An’s Tomb stands as material evidence of chieftain culture on the southwestern border of China. It is located at the seat of Huixi Town Government, Yongshan County. Falling within the planned area of the new Huixi Town, the tomb lies in the inundation zone of the Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station.
There are three tombs of the An chieftain clan. Among them, the tomb of Chieftain An Yongchang remains well preserved. Built in the 3rd year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1823), the tomb is 5.1 metres high and 8.8 metres wide, carved with exquisite patterns in vivid and lifelike designs.
Two stone ornamental pillars stand symmetrically in front of the tomb. Each pillar is 7.5 metres tall with a girth of 2.38 metres.
According to legend, the burial site was known as "Phoenix Spreading Its Wings". A malicious feng shui master suggested the descendants of the An chieftain erect two stone pillars right on the "phoenix’s wings" so that the mythical bird could never soar into the sky.
The top of each pillar is carved with a small stone lion, and regular Chinese characters are inscribed on the front, reading: "Erected on the nineteenth day of the tenth lunar month, the sixteenth year of the Jiaqing reign of the Great Qing Dynasty".
The entire tomb complex covers more than 4,000 square metres. Standing on the site, visitors can enjoy a full panoramic view of ancient Huixi Town and the river-crossing bridge.
