The Haozhiba Man-made Lake is located in the upper reaches of Gaoqiao River on the border of Shuizhu Township (northeast Yongshan County) and Gaoqiao Township of Daguan County. It is 76 kilometres away from Yongshan County seat and 12 kilometres from the government seat of Shuizhu Township. The area is accessible by highway with stable electricity supply and excellent water quality. Endowed with abundant water resources, the lake provides irrigation for more than 50,000 mu of farmland and domestic water for humans and livestock in the arid river valleys of Huanghua and Wuji in Yongshan.
Construction of the Haozhiba Man-made Lake began in 1974, and the whole project was fully completed in 1993. Sitting at an altitude of 2,200 metres, the lake covers an area of 5.42 square kilometres with a total storage capacity of 12.35 million cubic metres and a catchment area of 29.7 square kilometres. Forest coverage around the lake exceeds 95 percent. The annual average temperature stands at 9.6℃, and annual rainfall exceeds 1,250 millimetres.
The lake area features towering mountains, deep valleys and continuous overlapping peaks. Surrounded by rolling hills, it boasts dense forests and a wide variety of vegetation. Dove trees and Chinese yews growing in the woods are national first-class rare and endangered protected plants. Valuable medicinal herbs such as wild gastrodia, pseudo-ginseng and gentian also thrive here.
Wild crucian carp live naturally in the lake waters. The tokay gecko, a reptile of high medicinal value, inhabits the wetlands. There are also nationally protected wild animals including black bears, wild boars, pheasants and golden pheasants.
The ancient and simple Miao ethnic group lives around the Haozhiba Man-made Lake. Their traditional dwellings, costumes, food, ethics and rituals carry profound cultural heritage. The ethnic culture blends perfectly with the local ecological environment, creating a unique picturesque landscape where nature and humanity coexist in perfect harmony. The climate remains mild all year round with blooming flowers and singing birds in every season.
