Resembling an endless art gallery, Huize Grand Gorge is renowned for its wonders, precipices, serenity, depth and exquisite scenery.
The scenic area is situated in Yulu Township, 60 kilometers southeast of Huize County. Its entrance is known as the Gate of Life. The arched ceiling at the cave entrance features folds formed by magma hundreds of millions of years ago. Locals call this section the "Ceiling", which stretches for roughly 20 meters.
Past the ceiling, only a narrow strip of sky is visible overhead. The gorge winds for more than 10 kilometers. At its narrowest point, the distance between the two mountain cliffs is merely 1.6 meters, while the widest part measures no more than 20 meters. The towering cliffs rise steeply, as if hewn by axes and blades, presenting breathtaking peril. Lush vines, trees and wild flowers grow all over the rock faces, vivid green and fresh, draping the cliffs like enormous tapestries. Birds flit and monkeys leap among the crags, while the gurgle of running water echoes all around.
Springs seep from the rocks and cascade down like silver threads and glistening pearls, forming delicate waterfalls and wispy mist. Huge boulders lie scattered across the valley floor. The surging river churns up sprays of water and roars loudly. The extraordinary, precipitous, tranquil and profound scenery leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.
The gorge is packed with marvelous natural sights, including the Divine Monkey, Happiness Canal, Heavenly Gate Waterfall, Natural Bathing Pool, Peacock Spreading Its Tail, Narrow Sky, Lovers' Waterfall, Buddhist Holy Land, Stone Frog Watching Corals, Root of Life and Gathering of Heroes. The more stunning the views become, the more rugged the path grows, keeping crowds away and making this landscape a rare wonder on earth.
On the mountain wall to the left outside the cave stands a giant rock bearing a striking resemblance to The Thinker, the world-famous sculpture by French artist Auguste Rodin. Named the Great Thinker, it captures both the form and spirit of the original work with astonishing vividness.
