Shopping Guide to Shengsi Archipelago
When traveling in Shengsi, seafood is the main shopping item you can and must buy. Home to one of China’s most renowned fishing grounds, the archipelago boasts premium marine specialties rarely seen elsewhere, making them extra precious: yellow shrimp meat, wolfberry mussels, triple-alum jellyfish sheets, dried sea shrimp and cannonball jellyfish. Small yellow croaker, hairtail, cuttlefish, jellyfish and shrimp are mass-produced here, priced far lower than inland areas.
The Caiyuan Town Aquatic Market is the island’s only centralized seafood sales venue, located near Haijing Road in the town center.
Wolfberry Mussels
They grow across the East China Sea, with the largest population around Gouqi Island. The surrounding waters are completely pollution-free, yielding this valuable seafood rich in nutritional value.
Small Yellow Croaker
There are two varieties of yellow croaker: large and small. Together with hairtail, they are known as China’s three major sea treasures. Their fishing seasons fall between March–May and September–December.
Jellyfish Sheets
Jellyfish can be processed into two products: jellyfish sheets and jellyfish heads. Cold salad of jellyfish sheets with mung bean sprouts or enoki mushrooms delivers a fresh, crisp taste. Able to clear internal heat and detoxify the body, it is an ideal summer delicacy.
