Geographical Introduction to Wanhua Mountain
Wanhua Mountain is situated in the Du Fu River Valley, 16 kilometers southwest of Yan’an City. It is famous for wild peonies blooming all over its hills and valleys.
It ranks among China’s four major native habitats of peonies, and legend holds that this is the hometown of Hua Mulan, the legendary female warrior.
Tens of thousands of wild peonies grow densely across the mountain. Every spring and summer, colorful peonies burst into full bloom, filling the air with rich fragrance and presenting delightful scenery. In May 1939, Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Ren Bishi, Lin Boqu and other leaders hiked to Wanhua Mountain to admire the peonies.
Major scenic spots on Wanhua Mountain include the Peony Garden, Wanhua Lake, Lord Cui Temple, Chairman Mao’s Flower-Viewing Platform, Hometown of Hua Mulan, and Hua Mulan Cemetery. Apart from climbing the mountain to appreciate flowers, visitors can also take pleasure boats cruising across Peony Lake.
