Highlights of Wanhua Mountain (Yan’an)
Wanhua Mountain boasts abundant scenic spots, including the Army Service Pavilion, Immortal Viewing Pavilion, Poem Reciting Pavilion, Lord Cui Temple, and Gallery of Hundred Blossoms. At the foot of the mountain lies Wanhua Lake, with rippling blue waters crisscrossed by sightseeing boats and stone bridges arching over the waves. The lake and mountain scenery set off each other, bringing boundless joy to all visitors.
When Chairman Mao Zedong worked in Yan’an, amid his heavy state affairs, he twice took time off — in May 1939 and May 1940 — to visit Wanhua Mountain and admire the peonies alongside veteran revolutionaries including Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Dong Biwu, Lin Boqu and Ren Bishi. The Flower-Viewing Platform where Chairman Mao once stood is preserved open to tourists.
Several long stone carved walls stand within the scenic zone, engraved with impromptu poems and inscriptions left by celebrities of successive dynasties who came to appreciate the blossoms. Particularly eye-catching are two stone carvings: General Secretary Jiang Zemin’s handwriting "Wanhua Mountain" inscribed during his inspection here on September 11, 1989, and Chairman Li Peng’s inscription "Hometown of Peonies" created during his visit in November 1990.
A folk culture village has been built in Huayuantou Village, brimming with authentic local customs and drawing numerous out-of-town sightseers.
Wanhua Mountain Scenic Area (Xi’an, also named Jiuding Wanhua Mountain)
This scenic area sits in Heigou and Beishicao Valleys within Fengyu Valley on the northern foot of the Qinling Mountains, with an altitude of 2,000 meters and a distance of merely 46 kilometers from downtown Xi’an.
According to legend, Mother Li, birth mother of the Wanli Emperor of the Ming Dynasty, practiced spiritual cultivation and attained immortality on this mountain. Later, the Wanli Emperor built the Queen Mother Palace (in Heigou Valley) and the Saint Mother Hall (on the mountain summit) in memory of his mother, and bestowed the name Wanhua Mountain upon the land. It is also known as Jiuding Wanhua Mountain (Nine Tripods Ten Thousand Flower Mountain) for its nine uniquely shaped, elegant and precipitous peaks.
The scenic area features luxuriant vegetation and dense primeval forests with well-preserved original ecology. Clusters of graceful peaks layer upon one another, paired with exotic pines and fantastic rock formations naturally shaped by nature.
In spring, mountain wildflowers bloom profusely, permeating the air with rich fragrance.
In summer, drifting clouds wrap emerald peaks, unfolding endless varied vistas.
In autumn, mountain slopes are blanketed in fiery red maple leaves.
In winter, while most surrounding mountains wither and turn yellow, this range remains lush green, brimming with vitality.
Countless Buddhist and Taoist temples line the mountain path, accompanied by touching historical legends.
Records of Ningshan Subprefecture from the Qing Dynasty states: “…Wanhua Mountain in Fengyu Valley is the jewel of the Qinling Mountains…” This line attests to its unparalleled beauty, combining the precipitous grandeur of Mount Hua and the exotic grace of Huangshan Mountain. Only by climbing Wanhua Mountain to behold its marvelous peaks and exquisite ridges can visitors truly appreciate the boundless charm of the Qinling Range.
