Known as the "Little Switzerland of the East", Qilian County is situated 300 kilometers northwest of Xining near the border of Qinghai Province. Cross the Qilian Mountains and you will enter Gansu Province.
Zhuo'er Mountain lies 2 kilometers north of Qilian County and seldom receives group tour visitors. It is a perfect stop for self-driving or chartered car travelers traveling along the Xining – Qinghai Lake – Qilian Mountains – Zhangye route via National Highway 227.
Standing at an altitude of 4,300 meters, Zhuo'er Mountain features Danxia landforms. It sits right beside the Babao River, facing Niuxin Mountain, a sacred mountain of Tibetan areas, across the water. Shuttle buses are mandatory for entering the scenic area, as hiking uphill is extremely strenuous due to the high elevation. Endless stretches of the Qilian Mountain Range surround Zhuo'er Mountain. From June to August, the grassland glows with vivid emerald green, and the golden rapeseed flower fields here present richer layered and more magnificent views than those in Menyuan.
