2018 Travel Guide to Menyuan Rapeseed Flower Viewing
Menyuan County is 150 kilometers north of Xining and falls under the jurisdiction of Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province. It is famous for vast rapeseed blossoms in July every year and serves as a major oilseed production base in Northwest China.
Stretching dozens of kilometers and covering 600,000 mu, Menyuan’s rapeseed fields are far more spectacular than those south of the Yangtze River, forming an immense golden ocean. Most farmlands slope toward the river. Standing on the riverbank and looking out in both directions, visitors are greeted by boundless golden blossoms with the Haomen River winding through the middle. The river resembles a silvery ribbon edged with two golden trim strips, twisting and shimmering against the distant Qilian Mountains.
There are three top viewing spots for Menyuan’s rapeseed flowers:
- South Mountain opposite the county cement plant, around 4 kilometers southeast of Haomen Town (the county seat of Menyuan).
- Yuanshan Flower Viewing Platform in Qingshizui Town, roughly 20 kilometers west of Haomen Town.
- Daban Mountain Viewing Platform on the highway from Xining to Menyuan County Seat, approximately 30 kilometers from Haomen Town.
Most tourists opt for Qingshizui Town as the rapeseed fields here are densely clustered.

The Menyuan Rapeseed Flower Sea is located in Menyuan Hui Autonomous County, Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province. It is 150 km from Xining and 150 km from Qilian.
Chartered Car
A one-day round trip from Xining to Qingshizui Town costs about 500 RMB. Chartering a vehicle for sightseeing within Qingshizui Town costs 200–300 RMB per car, covering 4 to 5 scenic spots.
Intercity Minibus
Route: Xining — Menyuan County (Haomen Town)
More than a dozen buses depart daily from Xining Xinning Road Bus Station to Menyuan. The trip takes around 3 hours with a fare of roughly 40 RMB per person. You may alight midway at Qingshizui Town, which is about 20 km from Haomen Town.

Self-Driving
Self-driving visitors can reach the rapeseed flower sea from multiple directions including Datong, Qilian and Zhangye, and every access route is a scenic highway.
Bicycle Rental
Bicycles are available for rent in Qingshizui Town at 20–30 RMB per hour; bargaining is acceptable.
