Is Bird Island in Haibei Worth Visiting?
Bird Island lies in the western bay of Qinghai Lake, at the apex of the delta where the Buha River flows into the lake. It is the most popular scenic spot around Qinghai Lake, named for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds that inhabit the islands, including bar-headed geese, whooper swans, seagulls and brown-headed gulls.
There are two islands of different sizes standing opposite each other along the lakeshore, one to the east and the other to the west. The smaller western island is Haixi Mountain, also known as Minor West Hill or Egg Island. The larger eastern island is Haixipi Island, also called Cormorant Island for its tens of thousands of nesting cormorants.
Birds start arriving at Bird Island in April. The prime bird-watching season runs from May to July. In September, visitors can witness spectacular flocks of bar-headed geese flying south in V-shaped formations. The best time to spot whooper swans is from November to February every year.

Transportation
- A coach departs from Xining Long-distance Bus Station for Bird Island Town at 07:45 every morning. It passes through Gangcha County and arrives at 14:30, with a fare of 48 RMB. The return bus leaves Bird Island Town punctually at 15:00.
- Chartered vehicle: around 500–700 RMB for the whole trip. The gate of Bird Island Scenic Area is about 16 kilometers from Bird Island Town. Shared shuttle rides cost 10 RMB per person, while a private charter to the gate costs 40 RMB per vehicle.
