Where Lies the Land Farther North than China’s Northernmost Point? Is Mohe, China’s Northernmost Town, Worth Visiting?
Most people first hear of Mohe, the byword for China’s northernmost and coldest region, in junior high geography textbooks. Traveling to China’s northern tip, traversing lush pine forests of the Greater Khingan Range, visiting the China-Russia border in person, holding handfuls of pure white snow, and enduring bitter cold of minus 40 degrees Celsius—these are all reasons to head north all the way to Mohe.
Day 1: Mohe – The Nine-Twists-and-Eight-Turns Bend – Silver Birch Forest – First Bend of Heilongjiang River / Wusuli Shoal – Beihong Village (Overnight in Beihong Village)
This is the classic, time-efficient route from Mohe to Arctic Village with no unnecessary detours. The first stop is the Nine-Twists-and-Eight-Turns Bend. Standing on the top floor of the viewing platform halfway up the mountain, you can overlook the entire winding river bend and take in all the stunning scenery at a glance.
Further ahead stretches a vast silver birch forest, with slender straight trunks soaring toward the sky. If you come in winter, you can frolic and play snow fights with travel companions among the birch trees.
A short drive onward leads to the First Bend of Heilongjiang River. You may hike up over 900 wooden steps to the overlook. In winter, boundless dense birch and pine forests blanketed in pure white snow unfold before your eyes, creating a breathtaking grand view.
Wusuli Shoal sits close to the Nine-Twists-and-Eight-Turns Bend. It is the true northernmost point of China, located at a higher latitude than both Arctic Village and Beihong Village. There stands a stone monument engraved with the words “Congratulations—you’ve finally found the North!” Be sure to take photos with it.
Do not rush straight to Arctic Village; spend your first night in Beihong Village instead. Less famous than Arctic Village, it boasts a totally distinct landscape. Arctic Village is equipped with modern amenities including shopping streets, vacation villas and star-rated hotels, making it the perfect pick if you prioritize comfortable accommodation. However, if you long to experience authentic northeastern rural life, Beihong Village is a must-visit. Everywhere you look are wooden houses, wooden fences and stacks of firewood, brimming with genuine northeastern charm. On clear nights, you can gaze up at the dazzling Milky Way and countless stars—an invisible sight in cities.
Day 2: Beihong Village – Arctic Village (Overnight in Arctic Village)
The previous day’s itinerary involves plenty of driving. On this day, travel from Beihong Village to Arctic Village and spend the whole day exploring the village. It is home to China’s northernmost bank, primary school, post office and supermarket—every spot here claims the title of “China’s northernmost”. You will head back to Mohe on Day 3.
Travel Tips
- Admission ticket to Arctic Village costs 60 RMB (keep your ticket stub well, as it may be required for re-entry); students enjoy half-price tickets. Beihong Village is free of entry charge.
- Broadband internet coverage is available in both Arctic Village and Beihong Village, and Wi-Fi is accessible at most inns, so you need not worry about connectivity.
- The man-made viewing platform at the Nine-Twists-and-Eight-Turns Bend charges 50 RMB with no discounted tickets offered.
- Combined ticket for the First Bend of Heilongjiang River and Wusuli Shoal is 50 RMB per person; student tickets are half price.
- Wusuli Shoal and other spots lie near the China-Russia border. Do not cross the border without official permission.
- There is no public transport to the Nine-Twists-and-Eight-Turns Bend, First Bend of Heilongjiang River and Wusuli Shoal. You need to rent a private car for the trip, and hire a local driver familiar with the scenic areas.
