Wudangzhao Monastery

On par with the Potala Palace in Xizang, Ta'er Monastery in Qinghai and Labrang Monastery in Gansu, it is one of the four great monasteries of Lamaism in China. The monastery boasts magnificent and luxurious furnishings. All pillars in the scripture halls are wrapped in dragon-patterned plush carpets, the floors are fully covered with rugs, and the walls are adorned with colorful murals.

Nestled deep within the rolling Daqing Mountains of Baotou stands a grand, massive Tibetan-style lamasery — the renowned Wudangzhao Monastery, a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.

Wudangzhao is situated in Wudang Valley, roughly 70 kilometers northeast of Baotou City, Inner Mongolia. Amid layered mountain ranges and verdant pines and cypresses in the Daqing Mountains lies this imposing monastery complex. Together with the Potala Palace in Xizang, Ta'er Monastery in Qinghai and Labrang Monastery in Gansu, it ranks among China’s four most famous Lamaist monasteries.

Religious Site

June to September is ideal. Spring in Baotou is windy, accompanied by worsening sandstorms across Inner Mongolia, making it unsuitable for travel. Late autumn and winter are frigid, and the grasslands lose all greenery, so these seasons are not recommended.
