About Xilamuren Grassland
Xilamuren Grassland is located in Darhan Muminggan United Banner, Baotou City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Xilamuren means "Yellow River" in Mongolian. The grassland scenic area is commonly known as Zhahe, deriving its name from Puhui Temple, a Qing-dynasty Lamaist temple standing on the banks of the Xilamuren River.
The temple was originally the summer retreat of the Sixth Living Buddha of Xilituzhao Temple in Hohhot, constructed in the 34th year of the Qianlong reign (1769 AD). It features two layers of grand halls with exquisitely carved beams and painted rafters, presenting a spectacular sight. The Xilamuren River winds around the rear of Puhui Temple. Crossing the bridge over the river, visitors can climb Albinbao Mountain to overlook the boundless grassland scenery, which is utterly mesmerizing.
As an opening window of Darhan Muminggan United Banner, Xilamuren Grassland is also one of the earliest tourist resorts established in Inner Mongolia.
The scenic area offers a wealth of activities:
- Admire the picturesque grassland and watch sunrise and sunset over the steppe;
- Visit the grassland folk custom museum, attend grand Buddhist ceremonies at Puhui Temple and Aobao worship rituals;
- Enjoy traditional Mongolian sports including horse racing, wrestling, archery and equestrian shows, as well as Mongolian singing, dancing and bonfire parties;
- Take part in the grand annual Nadam Fair;
- Experience authentic local customs by visiting herdsmen’s families and joining their daily work such as herding, milking and making dairy products;
- Taste classic Mongolian delicacies including hand-served boiled mutton, roast lamb and various dairy foods;
- Ride horses across the grassland to fully soak in the stunning steppe vistas.
By watching and participating in these activities, tourists can deeply appreciate the natural beauty, profound cultural heritage and unique folk customs of the grassland, immersing themselves completely in the embrace of the prairie.

Best Travel Season
June to September is the ideal visiting window. Spring in Baotou is windy with increasingly severe sandstorms across Inner Mongolia, making it unsuitable for travel. Late autumn and winter are frigid, and the grassland turns barren without green foliage, so these seasons are not recommended.
