Baoshan has been known since ancient times as "a land brimming with gold, silver and treasures". It boasts prosperous trade and abundant natural products. Jadeite is the treasure of this frontier town. Yongzi, also known as Yunzi, ranks among the finest go stones. Tengchong is famous for three treasures: rattan weaving, Tengchong rice paper and Tengchong medicinal herbs. The Lujiang area is home to three top products: small-grain coffee, mangoes and aromatic tobacco. Besides these specialties, local delicacies including Yongchang dried duck, Mogu tea, Tongxin mung beans and carved plums live fully up to their reputations. Each has its unique charm and is deeply popular among tourists.

Recommended Specialties of Baoshan

Tengchong Jade Wares

Tengchong enjoys a great reputation as "the Hometown of Jadeite" and "the City of Jade". With a jade-processing history of roughly 500 years, it was China’s earliest, largest and longest-running jade trading hub. Burmese jade is exquisitely carved by local craftsmen into fine works with perfect shape and colour.

Small-Grain Coffee

Small-grain coffee grown in Lujiang Dam, Baoshan, ranks among the world’s top coffee varieties. Chinese and foreign experts have spoken highly of it for its premium quality, mellow aroma and excellent flavour, comparable to the world’s finest coffee beans. Regarded as a premium beverage in Europe, America and Arab countries, it is always in short supply.

Tengchong Rice Paper

First produced in the Qing Dynasty, Tengchong rice paper was originally named Guanyintang Large White Paper, later also called Yu rice paper. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, its production techniques were upgraded. Craftsmen developed a new generation of paper using the bark of paper mulberry (daphne) unique to the Gaoligong Mountains, together with tall white rice straw, hemp and bamboo. It is widely favoured by painters and calligraphers. The master painter Xu Beihong once commented that this paper retains all the merits of genuine rice paper, plus one outstanding advantage: paintings on it cannot be secretly peeled off by counterfeiters.

Yongchang Yunzi Go Stones

Yongchang Yunzi, the go stones produced in Baoshan (ancient name: Yongchang), have been famous since antiquity. Made with carefully selected raw materials and sophisticated craftsmanship, they feature bright yet unblinding colour and solid yet gentle texture. Renowned at home and abroad as premium go pieces, they have been presented as state gifts to foreign dignitaries on many occasions.

Rattan Weaving

Tengchong is a celebrated hometown of rattan weaving. The local rattan cane is tough, glossy, smooth to the touch and highly resilient, making it a superior natural weaving material. Locals craft a wide range of daily necessities such as rattan chairs and suitcases with superb workmanship. Elegant without being extravagant in simple cottages, tasteful without being shabby in luxurious mansions, these rattan products have enjoyed brisk sales through the ages.
