Where is Fuxian Lake located?
Fuxian Lake is China's largest deep freshwater lake and the biggest lake at the source of the Pearl River. It belongs to the Nanpan River water system and is situated across Chengjiang, Jiangchuan and Huaning counties in Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, more than 60 kilometers away from Kunming.
Formed by faulting and karst erosion, the lake stretches north to south and resembles an upside-down gourd — broad at both ends and narrow in the middle. Its northern section is wide and deep, while the southern part is narrow and shallow, with a constricted waterway in the center.
The lake surface sits at an altitude of 1,722.5 meters. It covers an area of 216.6 square kilometers and holds a water volume of 20.62 billion cubic meters. The average water depth is 95.2 meters, and the maximum depth reaches 158.9 meters. Its water storage capacity is equivalent to 12 times that of Dianchi Lake, 6 times that of Erhai Lake and 4.5 times that of Taihu Lake. It accounts for 72.8% of the total water reserve of Yunnan's nine major plateau lakes and 9.16% of the reserve of all freshwater lakes across China.
Tourists can camp along the lakeshore, go boating and swimming on the lake. A large number of resorts and hotels are also available nearby. Every summer, hordes of visitors come here to escape the heat and enjoy a relaxing holiday.
Major scenic spots in the Fuxian Lake area include Luchong Village, Fish-Dividing Rock, Mingxing Scenic Area and Gushan Island. To the south of Fuxian Lake, the Haimen River connects it with Xingyun Lake, which is also well worth a visit.
