Wenshan Prefecture is located in the southeastern part of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. The terrain here is rugged with a dramatic altitude difference. As a result, solar radiation varies greatly across areas of different elevations and slope orientations, leading to distinct thermal conditions.
Most parts of Wenshan enjoy mild winters without severe cold and cool summers without intense heat. Low-altitude areas tend to be warm, while high-altitude regions stay refreshingly cool. Due to the huge disparity in elevation, the prefecture features a distinct vertical climate, well described by the local sayings: "A slight rise in altitude brings a drastic change in weather" and "Weather varies within a ten-li radius".
