Classic Traditional Snacks of Yangjiang
1. Pig Intestine Rolls (Zhuchanglu)
Description: Fillings consist of stir-fried bean sprouts and wide rice noodles, wrapped in specially crafted thin rice sheets. Before serving, drizzle exclusive house sauce over the rolls and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and crushed peanuts. This is Yangjiang’s most famous local snack and highly recommended.
2. Mugwort Cakes, also known as Aima (Locals in Yangjiang suffix all pastries with "ma")
Description: Made of wormwood glutinous rice, steamed over boiling water. It clears summer heat and dispels dampness, with a delicate refreshing herbal aroma.
3. Leaf-Wrapped Cakes (Yietie)
Description: Available in savoury and sweet versions. The savoury filling is dried radish, garlic and assorted beans; the sweet filling is white sugar and crushed peanuts. The cakes rest on jackfruit or banana leaves while steaming, carrying a faint natural plant fragrance when eaten.
4. Gou Lizai (Dog-Tongue Pastry)
Description: Ingredients include acanthus, wild garlic, zanthoxylum nitidum, citrus hirsuta, rice and white sugar. Named for its dog-tongue shape. It removes internal dampness and detoxifies the body.
5. Wine Cup Mould Cakes (Jiubeiyin)
Description: Mainly glutinous rice and white sugar, pressed using small wine cups as moulds, shaped just like tiny wine cups, hence the name.
6. Glutinous Rice Fritters (Jiandui / Jianci)
Description: Filled with white sugar, peanuts and black sesame seeds, deep-fried until golden. Crisp outer crust, a staple pastry for weddings and celebrations.
7. Salty Water Dumplings (Xianshuijiao)
Description: Savoury pastry seasoned with cowpea powder, an essential breakfast staple.
8. Dried Salted Melon Slices (Guaxianzai)
Description: Fresh muskmelon preserved with salt and sun-dried. Stir-fry with garlic and a touch of sugar before eating, a perfect side congee dish.
9. Crispy Seafood Fritters (Yuma)
Description: Shangyang Town of Yangxi makes the most authentic Yuma. Minced fish, prawns and squid coated in batter and deep-fried. Best enjoyed piping hot.
10. Hand-Cut Rice Noodles (Daqiezai)
Description: Rice dough kneaded into blocks, sliced into strips, then boiled with toppings such as dried shrimp.
