Huangjing Primitive Forest Scenic Area is the last untouched wilderness along the 28th parallel north. It lies in northern Gulin County, within the Chishui River Basin at the transitional zone between the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Sichuan Basin. Covering an area of 433 square kilometers with an average altitude of over 1,300 meters, it features typical Danxia landforms of middle mountains and canyons formed by Cretaceous red sandstone. It is also the only well-preserved subtropical primeval evergreen broad-leaved forest on Earth at the same latitude (28° North).
Surrounded by rolling hills and shaded by lush trees, Honglong Lake boasts interlaced primeval forests and planted woods, home to a great variety of wild animals and plants. On sunny days, the lake surface is as clear as a mirror, reflecting green mountains. Birds skim across the water while schools of fish swim and play freely. In misty drizzle, thin fog shrouds the rippling lake. Boats drift leisurely on the water, accompanied by lingering fishermen's songs. In winter, ice branches, frost flowers and snow-laden trees present a breathtaking northern-style scenery. This is an ideal retreat for people to cultivate their temperament and soothe their minds.
The ongoing Longzhua River Water Diversion Project will create a ten-mile-long lake connected to Honglong Lake, turning the combined waters into a highlight attraction of the Huangjing tourist zone.
