The Best Time to Visit Niubei Mountain
Perched at an altitude of 3,600 meters, Niubei Mountain features volatile weather. Heavy snow blocks the mountain roads in winter, accompanied by bitter cold. Summer and autumn are mostly rainy seasons, leaving the ground wet and slippery with frequent dense fog. Therefore, the short spring period from April to May is generally regarded as the ideal time for a visit.
Even in this prime season, there is no guarantee that every traveler can catch all the stunning scenery. Local residents recommend mid-May as the optimum window. The weather tends to be more stable then, and azaleas burst into full bloom all over the mountains.
The above is the objectively recognized best season. I hiked up and down the mountain on April 24th and 25th. I only enjoyed the sea of clouds for around three hours, while thick fog shrouded the mountain for the rest of the time. In the week before my arrival, heavy fog lingered nonstop as well. Even in April, the so-called best month, foggy days lasted for at least ten days.
So here is my advice: just go whenever your vacation allows. Catching the magnificent views is largely a matter of luck, and there is no absolute best season.
By the way, some people may wonder what the dense fog on the mountain is like. Visibility drops to less than five meters. You will not be able to see the sea of clouds or sunrise at all. All you can do is watch your step carefully.
