Where is Niubei Mountain and How to Get There
To visit Niubei Mountain, you first need to head to Chengdu, where you can enjoy authentic hot pot along the way. From Chengdu, take a chartered car, drive by yourself or board a long-distance bus to Lengqi Town at the foot of the mountain. Note that the route via Sanhe Township has been closed due to development work. Once you reach Lengqi Town, you can either hire a vehicle or hike up the mountain.

Self-driving
Route: Chengdu → Ya'an → Tianquan County → Lengqi Town.
The National Highway 318 was fully open to traffic on June 1 this year. Previously, travelers had to take a detour via Shimian County to get to Lengqi.

Long-distance Bus
A direct bus ticket to Lengqi costs 94 yuan, plus a 3-yuan service fee. Though the official destination of this bus is Hailuogou, it passes through Lengqi, so it is practically a direct ride.
If tickets to Lengqi are sold out, you may buy a ticket to Luding and get off at Gandigu. Then take a taxi to Lengqi Town. If you have booked accommodation at a local inn in advance, you can also ask the innkeeper to pick you up.
- Group Tour
Group tours to Niubei Mountain depart from Chengdu every Friday. The general schedule is as follows: gather at around 7 p.m. on Friday and travel to Lengqi Town by chartered vehicle; climb the mountain on Saturday and head back to Chengdu on Sunday. The cost is about 500 to 600 yuan per person, covering meals and accommodation. Joining a group is a hassle-free option if your schedule fits.
Traffic Congestion Tips
Before National Highway 318 was completed in April, all vehicles had to detour through Shimian County, leading to severe traffic jams. We set off at 9:30 a.m. and did not arrive in Lengqi Town until around 6 p.m.
Now that the highway is open, the detour is no longer needed, cutting the journey by nearly 100 kilometers. Nevertheless, the highway sees a large number of heavy trucks. What's more, mudslides, road collapses and other geological disasters frequently occur during the rainy season, so traffic jams are still possible. Self-driving travelers are advised to check real-time road conditions in advance.
