Two-Day Tour of the Coal Capital
Fushun is an ancient city with a history of more than 7,000 years. It is the birthplace of Manchu culture, the cradle of the Spirit of Lei Feng, and a renowned coal capital. Its glorious past is embodied in Htuala City (the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty), West Open-Pit Mine (the largest man-made excavation on Earth), Fushun War Criminals Management Center (where Puyi was once imprisoned), and China Manchu Customs Park, the country’s only comprehensive tourist zone showcasing the development history of the Manchu ethnic group. Meanwhile, the Lei Feng Memorial Hall, which records and promotes the Spirit of Lei Feng, and Royal Polar Ocean Park, China’s largest polar ocean park, showcase the city’s vibrant new look!
Day 1: Royal Polar Ocean Park → Lei Feng Memorial Hall → War Criminals Management Center → Fushun Coal Museum (West Open-Pit Mine Observation Deck)
Royal Polar Ocean Park sits between Shenyang and Fushun. If departing from Shenyang, take the "Lei Feng Line" bus from Shenyang Railway Station or North Shenyang Railway Station and alight here. Within Fushun city, take Bus No.810 or No.811 to reach the park. There are numerous exhibition halls, so you may not have time to visit all of them; prioritize your favorite attractions.
After leaving the ocean park, take Bus No.37 to the Lei Feng Memorial Hall. Next, board Bus No.803, transfer to Bus No.603 at West 1st Road, and head to the War Criminals Management Center. This site once held Puyi and carries profound historical significance, well worth a visit.
From the management center, take Bus No.22 to No.11 Factory stop, then walk to the West Open-Pit Mine Observation Deck. You can overlook the massive pit and witness the stunning spectacle of Asia’s largest open-pit mine.
Dining
Have lunch near the Lei Feng Memorial Hall. The area is adjacent to large shopping malls including Tesco Wanghua, offering abundant dining options. You can try Fushun’s signature spicy mixed noodles at street-side stalls. Local eateries such as Wangwang Barbecue (famous for cold mixed noodles), Qianxilong Restaurant and Bot Pizza are also great picks.
For dinner, after touring the open-pit mine, take Bus No.3, No.6 or No.31 to South Station, Fushun’s city center. Countless large malls, food courts, shopping centers and supermarkets line the streets.
Accommodation
South Station is located in Xinfu District, the downtown core of Fushun, with an extensive range of hotels and inns for all budgets. Options include Shijiyuan Business Hotel on West 1st Road, Home Inn (Fushun Jiangjunqiao Branch), Youyi Hotel near the Nursing Home, and Meidu Hotel on Yingbin Road, catering to diverse accommodation demands.
Tips
Fushun city buses cost 1 yuan per ride and generally do not provide change. Please prepare small cash in advance.
Day 2: Yongling Mausoleum → Htuala City → China Manchu Customs Park
From South Station, take Bus No.7 to Fushun Long-Distance Bus Station, then transfer to a minibus bound for Xinbin and get off at Yongling. The journey takes 2 to 3 hours, so set off early.
Yongling Mausoleum and Htuala City stand on the east and west sides of Yongling Town respectively. Take a taxi or rickshaw to travel between the two sites. Yongling Mausoleum ranks first among the Three Imperial Mausoleums Outside Shanhaiguan of the early Qing Dynasty. Htuala City is famed nationwide as the birthplace of Nurhaci, the founding emperor of the Qing Dynasty, and renowned globally as the first capital of the Manchu people.
Later, take a taxi or walk east from Htuala City to China Manchu Customs Park to experience authentic Manchu culture and customs. It is recommended to depart Htuala City for downtown Fushun by 3 or 4 p.m.
