What to See & Do in Shennongjia | Travel Guide
Shennongjia is located in the northwest of Hubei Province, featuring crisscrossing mountains and rolling peaks. Legend has it that the ancient ancestor Shennong tasted hundreds of herbs here to cure people’s illnesses. Given the steep mountains and rugged paths, he built wooden ladders to climb up and gather medicinal plants. Later, local people named this place Shennongjia in memory of him.
The mysterious 30th parallel north runs across Shennongjia. The unsolved mystery of the Wild Man, the legend of Shennong testing herbs, Biography of Darkness — an epic myth of the Han nationality, the ancient salt road connecting Sichuan and Hubei, traditional Tujia wedding customs and rustic mountain charms all make this land endlessly appealing. Boasting magnificent peaks, refreshing clear springs and stunning scenery, Shennongjia is hailed as irreplaceable world-class exclusive tourism resource and an ideal destination for eco-tourism.
