Emperor Yan ranks first among the ancestors of the Chinese nation. He is the common ancestor of all Chinese people and the primogenitor of Chinese civilization. According to legend, Emperor Yan first cultivated the five staple grains to feed the people and pioneered China’s farming culture, exerting a profound influence on Chinese history.
From May 8 to 9, 2009, the First National Symposium on the Culture of Emperor Yan’s Hometown was held in Huitong. More than 40 national experts on history, Yi learning, the Yan-Huang culture, folk customs, ethnology and ancient Chinese characters unanimously reached a new conclusion that Huitong is the hometown of Emperor Yan, the Chinese ancestor.
"All Chinese share the same ancestor; the whole nation reveres Lianshan Mountain."
The Hometown of Emperor Yan is situated in Daping Village, Lianshan Township, roughly 10 kilometres south of the county seat within the Lianshan Basin. It is a treasured geomantic site gathering auspicious energy, boasting uniquely favourable cultural landscapes.
The scenic area features an elegant tranquil atmosphere, picturesque scenery and strong rural flavour, surrounded by rolling ridges and towering ancient trees. Major attractions include:
  • Nine connected wells where water ripples spread to all wells once one is stirred;
  • Yin-Yang Stones representing ancient worship of human reproduction;
  • Shennong Cave (Tiger Cave), the birthplace of Emperor Yan;
  • Lianshan Rock shaped exactly like the oracle-bone character for "mountain";
  • Lion Cave, one of Emperor Yan’s dwellings;
  • Lotus Pond, the sacred pond that never dries up;
  • King of Medicine Cave, where Emperor Yan pounded and decocted herbal medicines before attaining immortality;
  • Eight mysterious temples scattered in eight directions around the basin;
  • Tantang Site, a settlement of people from the Paleolithic Age;
  • The ruins of ancient Huitong City, shaped like a lizard locally known as "dog-skin snake".
