The Jiudong Natural Scenic Area lies in the southeast of Huitong County, on the border between Saxi Township and Ruoshui Town. Covering roughly 10 square kilometres, it is a large natural ecological scenic spot in Huitong County.
Jiudong gets its name from nine naturally formed pictographic pools and caves. Their names are Threshold Cave, Foot Basin Cave, Oil Can Cave, Golden Rooster Cave, Pig Trough Cave, Bamboo Mat Cave, Buffalo Cave, Cow Watching Cave and Sedan Chair Cave. The landscapes here are extraordinarily unique.
Seen from above, the waterfalls look like a white chain strung with nine jade pearls. Viewed from below, towering waterfalls plunge down from the sky with splashing spray, surging forward like thousands of galloping horses.
The scenic area features typical sedimentary rock formations. Dozens of graceful, oddly-shaped peaks rise up alongside deep valleys over 100 metres deep, all shaped by long-term wind erosion. Steep cliffs and flying waterfalls greet visitors everywhere, bringing the poetic feeling of "peerless beauty hidden away, unknown to the outside world".
A clear brook winds for miles through the mountains, connecting all major scenic sites. Its water stays clear all year round with abundant runoff. Sharp drops along the current create waterfalls of varied styles that refresh tourists greatly. The nine fantastic caves carved by flowing water blend perfectly with mountains and rivers, setting off each other beautifully.
The forest coverage rate reaches 98 percent, keeping the area green all year round. It boasts rich biodiversity, including more than ten kinds of rare trees under state protection, as well as many Class II and Class III protected wild animals. Therefore, it enjoys high value for scientific research and tourism. Giant salamanders and brown-tailed golden pheasants can often be found along streams and in woodlands.
Jiudong is about 25 kilometres from downtown Huitong with convenient transportation. It is adjacent to Gaoyi Ancient Village and Hongjiang Ancient Commercial City, enjoying remarkable geographical advantages for tourism development.
