Golden Dragon Mountain stands in the northeast of Huitong County, with its main peak rising to 1,075 metres above sea level. It takes its name from the legend of Prince Golden Dragon and was historically listed among the Eight Scenic Wonders of Huitong.
Surrounded by rolling mountains from Maan, Baozi and Jinzhu Towns, the whole mountain range looks like a soaring flying dragon. When bathed in the glow of the setting sun, the verdant ridges glow vividly green.
The main peak, Pagoda Hill, is home to an eight-sided stone pagoda constructed in the 45th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1706 AD, note: the year 1656 falls in the Shunzhi reign). Standing roughly 13 metres tall and 5 metres in diameter, the pagoda has no inner floors or side windows, with only one stone gate for entry and exit.
The construction legend of this octagonal stone pagoda, known as the Golden Dragon Summit, tells of a contest of magical powers between Emperor Yan and Prince Golden Dragon, namely Changyi, son of the Yellow Emperor. The two fought for forty-nine days before perishing together.
A couplet is carved on the gate:
Divine power safeguards the land and glorifies this sacred place;
Imperial grace grants noble titles and brightens the famous mountain.
The horizontal scroll reads: Virtue Matches the Heavenly Diagram.
The "Heavenly Diagram" refers to the Bagua Taiji Diagram. The couplet praises the contributions made by Emperor Yan and Prince Golden Dragon to the nation, saying their merits shall endure eternally alongside Golden Dragon Mountain, just as the Taiji Diagram lasts forever.
Inside the pagoda lies a wooden hall supported by massive pillars, dedicated to Prince Golden Dragon and housing a large stone statue of the prince. Beneath a flagstone at the foot of the shrine platform is an unfathomable air vent that constantly emits chilly wind.
Every autumn, tens of thousands of insects gather inside the pagoda. Local folklore regards them as the prince’s celestial horses.
Facing southward from the north, the pagoda boasts exquisite craftsmanship. It remains magnificent and well-preserved to this day.
As the old saying goes: A mountain gains spiritual fame not for its height, but for the immortals dwelling on it.
Golden Dragon Mountain is covered with lush bamboo and trees, with fresh spring water flowing everywhere. As the source of the Huitong River, it boasts an excellent ecological environment.
Visitors can enjoy flower-viewing hikes in spring, escape the summer heat, admire red maple leaves and pick wild fruits in autumn, and appreciate snow scenes while digging bamboo shoots in winter. With distinct seasonal charms all year round, it serves as an ecological oxygen bar integrating prayer, sightseeing, leisure and rural experiences.
