Spirit Road Stele of Liu Shunli, Zhuangyuan of the Ming Dynasty

The stele originally stood south of Huayuan Village, 5 kilometres west of the county seat. Erected in the 23rd year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1684), it is composed of three parts: the dragon head finial, the bixi tortoise base and the stele body.

The arched stele head bears a relief carving of two dragons playing with a pearl, their bodies winding and twisting. The tortoise base features a vividly carved turtle with its head stretching upward. The stele body is 2.69 metres high, 0.69 metres wide and 0.29 metres thick. It is enclosed by a 7-centimetre-wide border with finely incised cloud-and-dragon patterns. The vertical inscriptions are carved in relief regular script, arranged in four columns with 15 characters per full line.

The stele pavilion was a brick pavilion-style building with five ridges and six beast ornaments. It had upturned flying eaves and presented a tall and magnificent appearance. During the Cultural Revolution, the pavilion was demolished and the stele broken into pieces scattered in three locations.

In 1986, the Liu clan raised funds for restoration. They rebuilt the pavilion and re-erected the stele inside the Liu clan cemetery west of Huayuan Village strictly following the original design.

This is one of the best-preserved bixi-supported stone steles in Qi County, boasting exquisite carving techniques and high artistic value. The relief calligraphy achieves a perfect balance of strength and grace, making it a rare masterpiece of stone inscription art. It was designated a County-level Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit in 1986.
