Huqiu Temple

The site is located at Xingkou Village, 12 kilometres south of the county seat. The temple got its name because it was built on a tiger-shaped earthen mound.

The original construction date is unknown, and the temple was ruined in the Ming Dynasty. It was reconstructed in the 7th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1668), consisting of a mountain gate, a main hall and east-west side corridors. When Feng Yuxiang stationed troops in Henan during the Republican period, the building was demolished. It was rebuilt after the founding of New China, only to suffer destruction again in the Cultural Revolution. At present, only the middle hall and mountain gate remain, covering an area of one mu.

In the autumn of the 15th year of the Republic of China, CPC members Zhang Haifeng and He Xiongrong assembled a unit of peasant self-defence corps here. They launched a night raid on the recruitment office of Wu Peifu’s Beiyang warlord troops at Jifangli Village in Sui County. The rebel leader was captured alive, and a batch of weapons were seized. This action foiled the Beiyang warlords’ plot to sabotage the peasant movement.

In 1963, the People’s Government of Henan Province designated it a Provincial-level Cultural Relic Protection Unit.
