Houwu Scenic Area

The ancient Ming and Qing buildings of Houwu are situated in Houwu Village at the foot of Lishan Mountain in southern Yongkang. As a Famous Historical and Cultural Village of China, Houwu Village lies 15 kilometres from the urban district. A lofty green mountain shaped just like a folding screen stands before the village, while the winding Jinxi Stream flows behind it. Boasting clear waters and green hills, the village enjoys a picturesque and pleasant environment.

The village was founded in the 15th year of the Jiading reign of the Southern Song Dynasty (1222), with a history of more than 790 years and has nurtured numerous outstanding figures throughout the centuries. Despite vicissitudes of time, the village still preserves the largest and most intact complex of ancient architecture across Yongkang. Preliminary surveys record more than ten ancestral halls and ceremonial chambers built in the Ming and Qing dynasties, alongside over twenty grand ancient residential courtyards and refined study lodgings. Among them, the Wu Clan Ancestral Hall, Cheng Yi Ancestral Hall and Yiting Ancestral Hall feature distinctive local architectural culture and folk customs.
