Wufeng Scenic Area gets its name from five extraordinary peaks encircling the site: Jiming Peak, Taohua Peak, Fufu Peak, Pubu Peak and Guhou Peak. The scenic area boasts a tranquil, pleasant atmosphere with fresh air and gorgeous surroundings. All stone cave buildings here are constructed by erecting wooden frameworks inside natural grottoes, with overhanging rock cliffs serving as natural roofs without rafters or tiles. These cave dwellings stay warm in winter and cool in summer.
This place has long been a gathering spot for literati and scholars. Distinguished Southern Song thinkers Chen Liang, Zhu Xi and Lü Donglai once wrote works and delivered lectures at Wufeng Academy. It is the birthplace of the Yongkang School led by Chen Liang. Together with the Yongjia School and Jinhua School, the Yongkang School constituted the Eastern Zhejiang Utilitarian School of Thought, which once rivaled the Neo-Confucianism of the Cheng-Zhu School and occupied a remarkably vital position in the history of Chinese academia.
During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, to evade aerial bombardment, the Zhejiang Provincial Government of the Kuomintang relocated its offices to the Multi-story Cave Buildings of Wufeng in 1939 and remained here for four years. This site is the most well-preserved location in Zhejiang Province with outstanding research value related to the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.
