Legend Commemorating Three Immortals
Long ago, three female immortals surnamed Zhang, He and Li wandered to Fairy Peak at the boundary of Tonggu, Yifeng and Wanzai. Fascinated by the steep ridges, thick bamboo forests and picturesque landscape, they settled down here. They practised medicine and preached to help local people.
One year, a severe drought ruined all farmland and put villagers in mortal danger. The three immortals stood on the cliff and each waved a jade ribbon. Dark clouds rolled in at once, followed by violent winds, thunder and lightning, and torrential rain. Three waterfalls sprang up in the mountain ravine and flowed all year round.
When the Jade Emperor learned about this, he blamed the immortals for interfering in mortal affairs. He sent heavenly soldiers to capture them and lock them up in the celestial palace.
Local people built the Fairy Altar on Fairy Peak to commemorate the three goddesses. Incense has been burning here all year long. Especially on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, the anniversary of their settlement, worshippers from Tonggu, Yifeng and Wanzai gather here to hold grand sacrificial ceremonies. The waterfalls in the ravine were later named the Three Immortals Waterfalls.
