Kuiguang Academy

Kuiguang Academy stands behind the Tonggu County Grain Bureau. It was initiated by Zhou Zhiheng, a local Hakka resident, and funded jointly by dozens of Hakka clans. Originally named Kuiguang Hall and commonly known as Kuiguang Academy, it was later renamed Kuiguang Senior Primary School.

The construction began in the 40th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1775 AD). Facing north with its main gate on the southern side, it is a two-courtyard compound built with earth and timber, consisting of two buildings on the left and right. The total construction area covers 690 square metres.

During the Great Revolution, this place became the birthplace of revolutionary movements in Tonggu. Progressive intellectuals including Chen Baoyuan and Li Xiu led several anti-imperialist and anti-feudal student struggles here. Later they stayed on as teachers, continuing underground revolutionary work and recruiting CPC members. In the winter of 1925, they founded the Tonggu Party Branch of the CPC — the first Party branch in Yichun Prefecture.

In August 1927, a revolutionary armed force under CPC leadership, the Liuyang Workers’ and Peasants’ Volunteer Corps (later reorganized into the 3rd Regiment, 1st Division, 1st Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army), stationed in Tonggu. The 1st Battalion of this regiment set up camp in Kuiguang Academy and painted a large number of revolutionary slogans including the slogan for the Nanchang Uprising.

After the Pingjiang Uprising in 1928, Comrade Peng Dehuai led the 5th Red Army on repeated military campaigns across Tonggu. The Political Department of the 5th Red Army wrote numerous proclamations and slogans here, such as the Ten-Point Political Programme of the Communist Party and the Land Programme.

Kuiguang Academy was the earliest institution of higher education in Tonggu County. It is also an important revolutionary historic site with the largest number of well-preserved revolutionary wall slogans in the region. It has been designated as a Key Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the Provincial Level.
