Former Site of the Recruit Training Department of the Autumn Harvest Uprising Troops on the Hunan-Jiangxi Border — Wuqu Palace

Wuqu Palace is situated on Pingfeng Mountain in Jiangtou Village, Yongning Town, Tonggu County. It was first built during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. The building faces north and is constructed with earth and timber. It consists of three connected sections: front, middle and rear buildings. A large martial arts training ground lies between the front buildings. The preserved land area covers 1,200 square metres.

In 1927, when Mao Zedong came to Tonggu in person to lead the Autumn Harvest Uprising, Wuqu Palace served as a garrison for the uprising troops. Here the army set up the first Recruit Training Department in the history of our military. It was specially established to train newly enlisted soldiers and junior officers lacking combat experience. The instructors were General Chen Bojun and Zhang Ziqing, former Regiment Commander of the 31st Regiment of the 4th Red Army.

From the autumn of 1928 to the summer of 1930, Peng Dehuai led the 5th Red Army on repeated military campaigns across Tonggu, and the troops stationed here many times.

Wuqu Palace embodies profound cultural heritage integrating red revolutionary culture, Hakka folk culture and the folk belief in Guan Yu.
