Scenic Introduction

Jiangping Ancient Town sits 15 kilometres from downtown Dongxing. It is a tourist attraction integrating natural scenery and cultural heritage.
Originally named Jiangping, the area is an alluvial plain. It was once covered by primeval forests with towering ancient trees, including precious sandalwood, redbud, pine and fir trees.
In the 13th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty, Nanfu Academy was founded to cultivate local talents. In the 11th year of Guangxu, merchants from Nanhai, Panyu, Shunde and other places established the Guangzhou Guild Hall to facilitate trade. The French built an exquisite church to recruit followers and spread Christianity. Every weekend, resonant church bells echoed far and wide.
Jiangping was once a gathering place for scholars and merchants, boasting relatively early development of education and economy across Fangcheng region. Apart from prosperous culture and business, the ancient town also boasted fantastic natural scenery remembered as Eight Great Sights passed down through generations.
  1. Mist over the Ancient Stockade
This site lies around Jianglongzhaitou Village in Jiangping Town. In ancient times, towering trees stood sparsely populated here. Mist rose every dawn and dusk, shrouding the whole stockade. Bathed in morning glow and sunset rays, the landscape looked like an earthly paradise enchanting all visitors.
  2. Yin Ridge Cutting the River
Opposite the former Jiangping Park stands a seal-shaped earthen hill rising out of the east-flowing Jiangping River, splitting the waterway into two branches.
  3. Crane Perches beneath Pine Pavilions
The scenic spot is located at Hongkan Village of Jiangping Town. There once stood five giant pine trees so thick that three adults linking arms could barely encircle a single trunk. The five pines stood a few metres apart in an orderly arrangement. Thousands of cranes roosted on their umbrella-like canopies. The birds flew out to sea for food at dawn and returned to rest among the pines at night.
  4. Moon Reflection on Pearl Mound
This waterscape was first discovered by local fishermen at the White Dragon Pearl Fishery on the estuary of the Jiangping River. On a bare round mound surrounded by seawater lie piles of seashells of all shapes. After nightfall, the mound glimmers continuously no matter it is a bright moonlit night, a starry sky or pitch darkness; the darker the night, the brighter the mound shines. Up close, it is inlaid with countless pearls; from afar, it resembles a bright full moon sinking into the river, presenting a spectacular view.
  5. Ancient Underground River of Tongpi
In the picturesque Tongpi Bay once ran an underground river leading straight to Dongxing, which emptied into the Beilun River at Dayingjiao (near the present site of the old Dongxing Middle School).
  6. Silver Pit Waterfall
The valley got its name after people found silver-like antimony ore here. The waterfall is situated at the foot of Gaoying Mountain in Huangzhu Village. Surrounded by evergreen bamboo and woods, mountain springs converge into a stream plunging down a sheer cliff dozens of metres high.
  7. Five-Finger Peaks
Also known as Guanyin Mountain across the river from Jiangping Town, the mountain features five parallel peaks shaped like outstretched fingers. Deep in the mountains, the climate remains warm in winter and cool in summer. Crystal-clear streams flow under thick foliage with fresh clean air.
  8. Lights on Chessboard Ridge
According to legend, three immortals once played chess with lanterns atop Chessboard Ridge day and night. Their skills were perfectly matched, so the game went on endlessly and the immortal lanterns stayed lit all the time. From a distance after dark, the entire mountain top glowed brightly like pure jade and crystal.
