Scenic Description
Volcano Hill rises in southern Wuzhou, separated from the urban area by the Xun River (Xijiang River). Lush greenery blankets its slopes all year round. Its name derives from an ancient poetic line: Buried swords emit glimmers that light up the night sky; hidden pearls float and cast radiance over the mountain after dark.
Legend has it that Zhao Tuo, King of Nanyue in the late Qin Dynasty, buried swords inside this mountain. Every three to five days, glowing flames emerge after nightfall, starting at the foot and creeping all the way to the summit. The entire hill blazes crimson with fire shooting skyward, yet the glow fades away in an instant, leaving the mountain as fresh and emerald green as ever the next morning.
Another legend tells of a bottomless pool at the mountain’s foot holding a luminous pearl. As night falls, the pearl rises to the water surface. Under bright moon and stars, its radiance shines far into the heavens, resembling the sacred lamps seen on Emei Mountain and Nanyue Mountain — this magnificent sight is known as "Volcano Sunset Glow".
The mountain is abundant in lychees that ripen as early as April each year, once famous nationwide as "Volcano Hill Lychees". Bingxue Cave by the riverside at the foot yields delicious fine-scaled fish with an exquisite taste, especially tender in late spring. It is said this prized fish originated here before spreading to waters across the country. The Tang poet Shen Quanqi wrote the verse: I have braved the heat of Volcano Hill; my complexion fades amid the misty river’s miasma.
