Scenic Description

White Crane Hill stands beside Zhushan Hill on the banks of Yuanyang River. It ranks among the Eight Famous Sights of Wuzhou, formerly known as "Sunset Glow over Crane Mound".
When the morning sun rises above the Xijiang River while morning mist still lingers over the water, White Crane Hill, graceful and slender across the river, looks like a fairy maiden resting quietly amid clouds. At sunset, rosy glow casts the hill’s reflection onto the clear emerald Guijiang River, resembling a beautiful lady doing her makeup before a mirror.
In the 23rd year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1897), Wuzhou was opened as a trading port. The United Kingdom erected boundary markers around White Crane Hill and built a British Consulate here. The Wesleyan Methodist Mission, the British and Foreign Bible Society and the American Bible Institute also set up premises on the hill. A wooden sign at the foot of the hill banned visitors from climbing.
In the spring of 1918, several soldiers of the Guangxi Army climbed the hill for sightseeing. The British consul set wolfhounds on them. To defend himself, a platoon leader of the Guangxi Army killed one dog. Later, under coercion from the British Consulate, he was executed as compensation for the dog’s death. Following widespread anti-British protests, Britain returned White Crane Hill to China in 1928.
White Crane Hill was converted into a public park in 1930, covering around 14 hectares. The park is filled with towering ancient trees, singing birds and blooming flowers. On the summit sit the former site of the British Consulate, cultural relics including the stone tablet inscribed with "Return Our Land and Rivers", as well as flower beds, an amusement park and ponds.
Crane Mound Building boasts grand, simple and elegant architecture. Flowers, plants and bonsai trees are planted in front of the building, with a white crane sculpture placed at its center. The three-story building offers a panoramic view of the whole city. To the south, the surging Xijiang River flows eastward, with Xilong Islet faintly visible, forming a picturesque contrast against the sunset glow over Yunsheng Pagoda. To the east overlooks the downtown area, where the First Guijiang River Bridge spans east and west. Dense rows of buildings interweave with mist-shrouded trees, presenting spectacular varied scenery.
The Rare Stone Museum displays stalactites, rosy cloud stones and ink stones from southeastern Guangxi. Some stones resemble thousand-year longevity turtles; others look like golden phoenixes spreading their wings. One magical colorful stone bears a natural pattern strikingly similar to the portrait of the British Queen. Tourists marvel at the diverse and fantastic stone formations.
