Ancient Bolangsha is located at East Gate of Yuanyang County, 33 kilometers southeast of Xinxiang City. Also known as "the Site where Zhang Liang Assassinated the First Emperor of Qin" or "Zhang Zifang’s Ambush against the Qin Emperor", it witnessed a pivotal event in Chinese history and is designated a Key Municipal Cultural Relic Protection Unit of Xinxiang.
Zhang Liang, courtesy name Zifang, was a descendant of the State of Han. His grandfather and father both served as prime ministers for five successive rulers of Han. In 230 BC, the State of Qin conquered Han. Young Zhang Liang had not yet held official office in Han, and his family fell into ruin overnight.
In the spring of 218 BC, the First Emperor of Qin embarked on his third imperial inspection tour. Fueled by bitter hatred for his fallen homeland and slain kin, Zhang Liang recruited a strongman who carried an iron sledgehammer weighing over one hundred jin. They lay in ambush here to attack the emperor, yet the hammer struck the auxiliary carriage by mistake. Enraged, the emperor ordered a ten-day manhunt across the whole realm. Zhang Liang first hid in Tianzhou, then fled to Xiapi.
There he met the Elder Huangshi on a stone bridge. After humbly kneeling three times to retrieve the elder’s fallen shoes, he was granted Taigong’s Art of War. By studying this military classic, he grew into a core strategist for Emperor Gaozu Liu Bang of the Han Dynasty, ranking among the Three Outstanding Heroes of the Early Han.
Preserved on-site is a stone stele inscribed with "Ancient Bolangsha", donated and erected by Xie Baojing, Magistrate of Yangwu County, in the 2nd year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1663 AD). Other memorial structures include the Main Hall of Zhang Liang and the Bolang Stele Forest. This scenic spot integrates historical commemoration and sightseeing, making it a well-loved tourist destination.
