Lishu Guandong Farming Culture Museum

Guandong is one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization with a time-honored farming culture. As early as remote antiquity, primitive agriculture in China had reached a fairly advanced level, not to mention the splendid agrarian civilization of later ages. The ancient inhabitants of Guandong were mainly nomadic ethnic groups including the Manchu and Mongolian peoples, who relied on fishing and hunting as their primary means of production and livelihood. Compared with the Central Plains, agricultural cultivation in Guandong began much later.
In particular, the migrants from Shandong, Hebei and Shanxi who participated in the historic migration "Braving the Journey to Guandong" brought a complete set of farming traditions to this land. Hence, Guandong farming culture became an authentic branch inherited directly from that of the Central Plains.
The long-standing farming culture has accompanied the Chinese nation through times of recuperation and population growth, shaping our entire civilization. Today, trends of modern civilization are relentlessly eroding traditional culture. If we abandon our agrarian heritage, we will inevitably lose touch with our history, our hometown roots and our country.
General Secretary Xi Jinping has expressed his wish for us: "We can see the mountains, gaze upon the waters, and retain our nostalgia for hometown." When developing rural economies and building a moderately prosperous society, mountains, rivers and hometown nostalgia constitute our cultural roots. Protecting cultural relics and constructing distinctive towns endowed with historical memories, regional characteristics and ethnic customs is the way to preserve such nostalgia.
The establishment of Jilin Lishu Guandong Farming Culture Museum aims to rescue historical and cultural heritage and salvage ancient artifacts that are gradually fading and on the verge of extinction. At the very least, we intend to preserve a miniature of bygone eras and precious memories for future generations, thereby safeguarding our cultural roots.
The Party Committee and People’s Government of Caijia Town made a resolute decision to build Jilin Lishu Guandong Farming Culture Museum. As an important component of the Lishu Black Soil Forum, the museum will greatly boost the construction of "Beautiful Villages" and the development of rural tourism in the town. Seizing this opportunity, the town strives to build itself into the most charming village and a shining pearl along the East Liao River.
Construction of Jilin Lishu Guandong Farming Culture Museum commenced in 2016. The museum covers a total area of 1,000 hectares, of which the core refined exhibition zone spans 45,000 square meters. It is divided into two major sections: indoor exhibition halls and outdoor exhibition zones.
Four indoor halls have been completed, namely the Production Hall, Daily Life Hall, Folk Custom Hall and Fine Collection Hall. The museum houses over a thousand ancient farm tools, daily necessities and folk ritual implements collected locally. Each artifact serves as tangible cultural evidence, a snapshot of daily life, and a carrier of folk legends from its corresponding historical period.
The outdoor exhibition area consists of five core zones: the Central Stone Artifact Exhibition Zone, Willow Palisade Section, Stone Mill Corridor, Craftsmen Culture Park and Modern Agriculture Exhibition Park.
  1. Central Stone Artifact Exhibition Zone
Covering 10,000 square meters, the courtyard of Caijia Village Committee displays hundreds of stone relics. Highlights include pickled vegetable vats over 200 years old, gate foundation stones from wealthy households of olden times, stone rollers for compacting farmland, stone troughs for livestock feeding, stone mortars for husking rice, and the more precious chastity archways erected to honor virtuous women in ancient times.
  2. Willow Palisade Section
A segment of the Qing Dynasty Willow Palisade together with a border gate has been reconstructed in the 2nd Community of Caijia Village, occupying an area of 5,000 square meters. To this day, Caijia Town remains the first and only place nationwide to reconstruct the Willow Palisade.
  3. Stone Mill Corridor
Spanning 10,000 square meters, this kilometer-long corridor lined with 160 sets of stone mills greets visitors entering Caijia Village from the north off Highway 102.
  4. Craftsmen Culture Park
With a total area of 20,000 square meters, it comprises an open-air root carving zone and a greenhouse planting zone.
  • The open-air root carving zone covers 10,000 square meters and features 138 sculptures distributed across seven themed sub-zones: Prosperous Livestock, Chinese Zodiac Animals, Master Craftsmen, Forest Wildlife, Mythical Beasts, Amphibious Creatures, and Singing Birds of All Kinds.
  • The greenhouse planting zone also stretches 10,000 square meters, growing various pollution-free vegetables such as baby bok choy, cucumbers and chili peppers.
  1. Modern Agriculture Exhibition Park
Its core agricultural technology features ridge angles optimized for maximum light absorption, paired with wide-ridge double-row no-till seeding. This setup improves ventilation and light penetration to raise photosynthetic efficiency. Flat sowing preserves soil moisture and guarantees stable seedling emergence even in dry spring seasons. Additionally, rotational fallow farming slows soil desertification, elevates soil organic matter content and enriches soil fertility.
Our experimental farm has the widest promotion coverage and best cultivation outcomes among all trial plots across the three northeastern provinces of China. Unlike most farms that adopt north-south ridge alignment, our fields are laid out at a 45-degree southwest angle to achieve optimal high-efficiency light utilization as validated by agricultural scientists.
Through persistent labor and daily livelihood activities, the ancient people of Guandong fostered fine traditions: intensive cultivation of land, frugality in production, economic policies that enrich clans and common people, and a cultural philosophy of harmony between heaven, earth and humanity. They created a splendid farming civilization that laid a solid foundation for the survival, reproduction and growth of the Chinese nation, carrying profound practical significance for us to inherit and advance farming culture today. In this sense, Guandong Farming Culture Museum stands as a hall showcasing the meritorious achievements of our ancestors.
During the preparation and construction of Jilin Lishu Guandong Farming Culture Museum, government cadres and local residents of Caijia Town poured boundless enthusiasm and arduous labor into the project, which also received extensive attention and robust support from all sectors of society. We hereby express our sincere gratitude to everyone.
