Lishu County Museum
Founded in 2005, Lishu County Museum is affiliated with the Bureau of Culture, Radio, Film, Television, Press and Publication of Lishu County. Housed at the Former Headquarters Site of the Siping Defense Campaign of the Northeast Democratic Allied Army, a Provincial-level Cultural Relic Protection Unit of Jilin Province, the museum covers a land area of 1,709 square meters with a building area of 530 square meters. It preserves over 3,254 cultural relics and serves as a comprehensive museum, holding group membership in the Chinese Museums Association.
From April 5 to May 18, 1946, senior commanders of the Northeast Democratic Allied Army including Commander-in-Chief Lin Biao and Political Commissar Luo Ronghuan set up their headquarters here to direct the world-famous Siping Defense Campaign, historically known as the "Madrid of the East". As the first large-scale contest between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China in Northeast China following the victory of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, this extraordinary urban defensive battle exerted a profound influence on the subsequent military situation in Northeast China and stands as a classic campaign case in the military history of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.
Drawing on revolutionary historical and cultural heritage, and centering on the revolutionary history, combat feats and revolutionary spirits embodied by these relics, the museum hosts four special exhibitions within the former headquarters site: Exhibition of the Operations Room at the Siping Defense Campaign Headquarters, Red Memories — Exhibition of the Siping Defense Campaign History, Red Melodies — Exhibition of Achievements in Modern Lishu, and Ancient Charm of Hanzhou — Exhibition of Historical Cultural Relics of Lishu. These displays trace the CPC’s revolutionary struggles in Northeast China and showcase the time-honored civilization of Lishu land.
The museum has received a series of official honors:
In 2014, it was designated a National AA-level Tourist Attraction by the former National Tourism Administration.
In 2015, the People’s Government of Jilin Province accredited it as a Jilin Provincial Demonstration Base for National Defense Education, while the Organization Department and Party School of the CPC Siping Municipal Committee named it an On-site Teaching Base for Red Party Spirit Education.
In 2016, the CPC Jilin Provincial Committee recognized it as a Jilin Provincial Education Base for the History of the Communist Party of China, and the CPC Siping Municipal Committee and Siping Municipal People’s Government awarded it the title of Siping Municipal Patriotic Education Base. It was also listed as a red tourist site on one of China’s 65 Boutique Red Tourism Routes (the Baicheng-Changchun-Lishu-Liaoyuan Route) by the National Red Tourism Coordination Office.
