Basic Overview
Lop Nur, dubbed the Sea of Death and the Ear of the Earth, sits in the eastern Tarim Basin, Ruoqiang County, Bayingolin Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang, Northwest China. It is a dried-up ancient terminal salt lake and one of the harshest extreme wilderness areas on Earth, with a total playa area around 20,000 km² and an average altitude of 780 m, the lowest terrain of the Tarim Basin.
Known as the ultimate off-road & extreme adventure destination in China, it features brutal natural conditions, precious Silk Road relics, unique salt crust landforms and profound modern exploration stories. All visits require official permits; private unapproved entry is strictly forbidden.
1. Extreme Natural Environment (Core Extreme Features)
Climate & Hydrology
Annual precipitation is merely 23 mm, while annual potential evaporation hits 2,728 mm, creating an ultra-arid hyper-desert environment. Summer surface temperatures can exceed 70°C, with violent sandstorms and severe temperature swings between day and night.
Fed historically by the Tarim River and Kongque River, the large lake dried up completely in the 1970s due to water conservancy projects upstream. The whole basin is now covered by 30–100 cm thick hard salt crust with cracked radial textures, forming the iconic ear-shaped outline visible from satellite imagery.
Typical Landforms
Yardang Landform: Wind-eroded rocky mounds spread widely, presenting weird, alien-shaped rock clusters.
Salt Flat Wasteland: Hard, jagged salt layers damage vehicle tires easily; mirage is a common landscape in daytime.
Barren Gobi & dead river channels stretch endlessly, with zero stable surface fresh water in the core no-man’s-land.
Ecological Condition
The zone belongs to the Lop Nur Wild Camel National Nature Reserve, home to critically endangered wild Bactrian camels. Almost no other plants or wild animals can survive the harsh environment, resulting in absolute wilderness silence across most regions.
2. Historical & Cultural Significance
Ancient Silk Road Civilization
Lop Nur was a vital water source and transportation hub on the ancient Southern Silk Road. The famous Loulan Ancient Kingdom once prospered along its western lakeshore for centuries before vanishing into desert sands, leaving ruined cities, ancient tombs and well-preserved Tarim mummies as precious archaeological treasures. Early travelers including Faxian and Sven Hedin recorded this wandering lake in historical documents and expedition journals.
Modern Special History
Lop Nur served as China’s major nuclear test site from 1959, witnessing the birth of China’s atomic and hydrogen bombs, bearing special national historical memoriesIDN Times.
The disappearance of scientist Peng Jiamu in 1980 has made Lop Nur a legendary mysterious symbol for Chinese explorers.
Large-scale potash mining bases have been built in the western Lop Nur basin, supporting China’s agricultural fertilizer industry amid the barren wilderness.
3. Extreme Travel Experience Projects
Lop Nur only supports organized escorted cross-country expeditions, no self-driving solo travel:
Off-road crossing challenge: Drive through salt shell roads, yardang zones and dry riverbeds, testing vehicle performance and team survival capabilities.
Geology & landscape photography: Capture the ear-shaped salt flat panorama, sunrise/sunset over yardangs and vast silent wilderness scenery.
Silk Road relic exploration: Guided visits to Loulan Ruins, Milan Ruins and ancient beacon towers (with special cultural relic access permits).
Wilderness survival experience: Learn water rationing, heatstroke prevention, sandstorm sheltering and desert navigation under professional guides.
4. Travel Regulations & Essential Tips
Access Permit
Three mandatory certificates: desert entry permit issued by local forestry & reserve bureau, cultural relic visiting pass for ancient sites, and escort service from certified local professional teams. Illegal trespassing faces heavy fines and legal liabilities.
Best Travel Season
Late March to early June, September to mid-November (dry & mild period); summer is deadly hot, winter brings strong cold winds, both unsuitable for crossing.
Must-Prepared Supplies
Vehicles: Modified 4WD off-road vehicles with spare tires, repair tools and sufficient fuel reserves.
Materials: Massive purified water, high-calorie food, professional heat-insulated clothing, strong sunscreen, anti-sand goggles, satellite phone (mobile signals are completely lost in core zones), first-aid kits.
Safety Rules
Never leave the convoy arbitrarily; salt flats have hidden soft salt mud traps; wild camels are protected species and cannot be disturbed. Obey all instructions from expedition leaders.
5. Classic Extreme Routes
Short Day Tour (Ruoqiang Town → Luozhong Potash Base): Entry-level extreme experience for beginners.
3–4 Days Classic Crossing: Ruoqiang → Ear of the Earth viewing point → Yardang landform cluster → return, mainstream sightseeing route.
7–10 Days In-depth Adventure: Cover Loulan Ruins, ancient Lop lake bed, nuclear test memorial sites, high-difficulty hardcore crossing for experienced outdoor enthusiasts.
Core Travel Theme
Extreme Lop Nur travel is not leisure tourism. It is a journey to confront nature’s brutality, trace lost civilizations and challenge personal physical and mental limits amid the silent no-man’s land.
