 Basic Overview
The Southern Route of the Ancient Silk Road is one of the two core overland trunk routes of the terrestrial Silk Road spanning China’s northwest inland regions. Originating from Chang’an (modern Xi’an), the ancient capital of the Han Dynasty, it stretches westward through the Hexi Corridor into Xinjiang, then winds along the southern foot of the Tianshan Mountains and the northern edge of the Kunlun Mountains across the Tarim Basin, eventually connecting with Central Asia, West Asia and the Mediterranean world. Together with the Northern Silk Road, it formed the major land channel for ancient Eurasian material exchange, cultural communication and ethnic integration.
Geographic Route Distribution
Starting from Dunhuang in Gansu Province, travellers of ancient times headed west into Xinjiang through the Yangguan Pass.
Inbound Xinjiang section: Pass through major ancient oasis kingdoms including Shanshan (Loulan), Qiemo, Yutian (Hotan), Khotan, Yarkand and Kashgar. These desert oases supplied water, food and camels for caravans, serving as vital transfer stations amid the Taklamakan Desert.
Westward outbound section: From Kashgar, cross the Pamir Plateau (the “Roof of the World”) into Fergana Valley, Samarkand and Bukhara in Central Asia, further extending to Persia (ancient Iran), Mesopotamia, the Arabian Peninsula and the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
Core Historical Functions
Commercial Trade Channel
Chinese silk fabrics, paper, porcelain, tea, ironware and agricultural technologies were transported westwards via this route. Meanwhile, spices, grapes, pomegranates, walnuts, horses, glassware, jewellery and exotic handicrafts from Western regions were introduced into ancient China, greatly enriching China’s material life and agricultural varieties.
Cultural & Religious Dissemination Path
Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism and Nestorianism were introduced into inland China along the Southern Silk Road. A great number of grottoes, Buddhist temples and rock carvings were built along the route, represented by the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, Kizil Grottoes and Kucha ancient relics. Art styles of painting, sculpture and music blended Eastern and Western aesthetics here.
Political & Diplomatic Link
It facilitated official envoy exchanges between Chinese imperial courts and western states. Famous missions such as Zhang Qian’s journeys to the Western Regions laid the foundation for the formal development of the Southern Silk Road, consolidating dynastic governance over the western frontier.
Representative Cultural Heritage & Remains

Current Value
Nowadays, the Southern Route of the Ancient Silk Road is an indispensable part of the Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang’an-Tianshan Corridor World Cultural Heritage. It witnesses the long-standing friendly exchanges between China and Eurasian countries. Under the Belt and Road Initiative, the historical southern silk road corridor has been revitalized into modern transportation, cultural tourism and economic cooperation passages, inheriting the ancient spirit of peace, openness and mutual benefit.
