 Basic Overview
Ulugh Muztagh, literally meaning “great ice mountain” in Uyghur, stands as a landmark peak in the East Kunlun Mountains, sitting on the border of Ruoqiang County (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region) and Shuanghu County (Xizang Autonomous Region), at coordinates 36°16′–36°42′N, 87°05′–87°39′E. Its main summit reaches an altitude of 6,973 meters, ranking it the second-largest modern glacier distribution zone within the entire Kunlun Mountain range. Locked inside the Altun Mountain National Nature Reserve, this high-altitude frigid area features an extremely arid continental alpine climate controlled mainly by westerly circulation, with frigid temperatures all year round that sustain stable large-scale modern glacier development.
Modern Glacier Distribution & Morphological Characteristics
According to the Second Chinese Glacier Inventory, the Ulugh Muztagh massif nurtures 214 modern glaciers of various scales, covering a total glacial area of 662.20 km². The glacier system boasts complete glacial types dominated by large ice cap glaciers (flat-topped glaciers) on the summit planation surface, plus valley glaciers, cirque glaciers and hanging glaciers on mountain slopes. A distinctive geological feature here is that glaciers on northern and southern slopes connect across the mountain ridge, forming an integrated large ice sheet complex.
North-facing & northwest-facing slopes: Concentrate the largest number of small-sized glaciers (most shorter than 1 km), with dense ice cracks and active ice movement. The Yulinchuan Glacier on the northwest slope is famous for surging glacier behavior; its ice tongue advanced over 500 meters during the 2007–2011 surge event accompanied by massive ice collapse and ice fracture.
South-facing & southeast-facing slopes: Have fewer glaciers yet longer individual ice bodies with gentler gradients; glacial meltwater feeds a string of inland alpine lakes including Yanghu Lake and Aqqikkol Lake on the northern Xizang Plateau.
The regional equilibrium line altitude (ELA) of glaciers averages 5,700–5,900 m. Low air temperature outweighs scarce precipitation, making persistent low temperature the core condition for maintaining modern glacier stability.
Hydrological Value of Local Modern Glaciers
The modern glacier group of Ulugh Muztagh acts as a critical solid water reservoir for the hinterland of the northern Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.
Northern slope meltwater: Feeds the headwaters of the Qiemo River (Cheerchen River), the major inland river in southeastern Xinjiang, sustaining oasis ecology and downstream desert water balance in the Tarim Basin southern margin.
Southern slope meltwater: Supplies dozens of enclosed salt lakes on the northern Xizang Plateau, supporting the fragile alpine wetland and high-altitude desert ecosystem across the Changtang Plateau抖音百科.
Ecological Environment & Glacier Dynamic Changes
The glacier peripheral zone belongs to typical alpine desert steppe, with only sparse cushion plants surviving at elevations below 5,200 m. The whole glacier habitat is a core habitat for wild protected species such as Tibetan wild asses and Tibetan antelopes, strictly protected by national nature reserve regulations抖音百科.
Under global climate warming, Ulugh Muztagh glaciers show a slow retreat trend from 1960 to 2023, with an average annual glacial area loss of 0.83 km² and an annual ice terminus retreat rate of 2.21 meters. Compared with glaciers in the inner Tibetan Plateau and Tianshan Mountains, its mass loss rate remains relatively mild thanks to the buffer effect of low-temperature high-altitude environments.
Tourism & Mountaineering Features
Restricted by harsh natural conditions, poor traffic accessibility and strict ecological protection policies, Ulugh Muztagh’s modern glacier landscape remains a primitive, rarely-disturbed alpine glacier wilderness. It is only open to professional glacial researchers, licensed high-altitude mountaineering teams and scientific expeditions. The grand view of ice cap platforms, seracs, glacial moraines and ice caves creates top-tier wild glacier sightseeing and geological observation resources in inland China.
