A Folk Culture Tour of Agritainment in Huangshan Town
Huangshan Town of Yulong County has been developing agritainment tourism products for many years. It has formulated the tourism theme: Enjoy rural pastoral scenery, taste authentic Naxi farmhouse dishes, experience Naxi farm work, and savour genuine Naxi rural fun, which has achieved remarkable market results.
Nevertheless, several points deserve attention for sustainable development:
Residential buildings should retain authentic Naxi rural architectural features. Popular agritainment villages such as Baihua and Changshui now widely install large iron gates and cover walls and floors with shiny ceramic tiles, eroding the local distinctive ethnic style.
Villages should maintain an idyllic pastoral atmosphere without constructing high-rise buildings. Priority should be given to preserving classic scenes including grey tiles, whitewashed walls, farmhouse courtyards and crisscross farmland.
In the past, along ditches, farmlands and country roads in most villages of Huangshan Town grew intertwined flower hedges and trellises covered with roses and primroses. These barriers prevented cattle and horses from trampling crops, shielded farm produce from bitter plateau winds, and helped retain soil moisture and conserve water. They formed a unique ecological agricultural environment and shaped the iconic pastoral landscape of Naxi villages on the plateau basin.
Unfortunately, this distinctive rural scenery in Baihua Village is gradually vanishing. Neglected river dredging has made watercourses shallower and narrower, leading to a sharp decline in fish and shrimp populations. What is more, local residents clear away rose bushes and other plants along field ridges and ditches to expand arable land. Consequently, the original rural charm is fading away day by day.
