The Altun Mosque was a royal mosque for the imperial family during the Yarkand Khanate. It was constructed in 1533 by Abdurashid Khan, the second ruler of the Yarkand Khanate. It was renovated by Khoja Dania in 1735, and the government carried out restoration work in 1988 while preserving its original appearance. Nowadays, it serves as an open religious venue for local residents.

A large number of Buddhist patterns and ancient inscriptions are well preserved inside the mosque, which proves that the Altun Mosque was reconstructed from an ancient Buddhist temple.

The Altun Mosque bears great research value for studying the evolution of religions in Shache.
